David Bordwell’s superb combination of journalism and film history in this wonderfully written piece on the end of 35 mm prints at the longest family-run theater in Monroe, Wisconsin. Shared by friends on a social networking site. This kind of writing is what drove me to film studies, and ultimately motivated the kind of research I pursued for my doctoral degree. Yet, in retrospect, it feels as if I’ve moved further and further away from it. I’m looking forward therefore to the upcoming months in Bombay in an attempt to get a snapshot of the contemporary multiplex cinema, which is already attracting considerable scholarly attention and is the topic of one of my panels for the forthcoming Society of Cinema and Media Studies annual conference in Boston.
