These are photographs of ex-votos (latin for “from a vow”) – oil paintings on tin, votive images left by people in cathedrals in Mexico. They are part of a larger class of religious oil paintings on tin, called retablos. Aside from ex-votos, the other kind of retablo is called a santo, paintings of saints, of which there is one in this series (the first one that is not part of the slideshow). I found these retablos in Antigua, Guatemala, in….2005? I visited Guatemala and Mexico to get a first hand look at the bat lady’s work in the finca. We packed in some site-seeing in the process.
